The Libyan National Oil Corporation's subsidiary, Brega Oil Marketing Company, has announced an updated reservation system for distributing cooking gas cylinders to citizens across Libya, effective from August 9, 2025. The initiative seeks to streamline allocation of this essential household commodity and ensure equitable access.
According to reports from Al Mashhad Libya and Libya Akhbar, the updated system, last revised on March 14, 2026, allows citizens to register online through official channels and receive official receipts for allocated cylinders. Brega officials said the mechanism eliminates duplicate allocations and creates a transparent audit trail.
The upgraded platform includes real-time tracking, automated receipts, and SMS confirmations. Users can modify or cancel bookings via the portal. Backend upgrades prevent manipulation and ensure subsidies reach intended beneficiaries by requiring verified ID during registration.
Eng. Ahmed Mustafa, Brega distribution spokesperson, told Libya Akhbar: "The system incorporates user feedback to simplify registration while strengthening verification." He added the goal is to cut average waiting times from several days to under 24 hours.
Cooking gas remains vital for Libyan households, especially where electricity is unreliable. Subsidized cylinder distribution via authorized companies like Brega ensures affordable cooking fuel.
Ministry of Planning data shows residential cooking gas represents about 18% of household energy expenditure in Libya, higher in western and southern regions where alternatives are scarce. Stable distribution prevents price spikes during peak demand like Ramadan and winter.
Analysts from Tripoli's Energy Research Institute note efficient systems reduce parallel market activity and ensure subsidies reach intended recipients.
Distribution under the new system starts Saturday, August 9, 2025. Citizens should visit Brega's official website or authorized centers to register, presenting valid ID and family booklets.
Registration details, required documents, and distribution point locations will be on Brega's website and Facebook page. A call center operates 8 AM–8 PM daily for technical help.
Brega partnered with municipal councils in Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata, and Sabha to set up auxiliary registration points for those facing online access challenges.
The mechanism uses geographic allocation algorithms to prevent urban hoarding and guarantee supply to remote areas. Each center gets a weekly quota based on population density and historical consumption.
Monitoring committees with Brega, Ministry of Economy, and civil society reps will audit weekly to verify quota compliance and address discrepancies.
Pilot tests in Zawiya and Zuwara showed a 40% drop in unequal distribution complaints versus the prior cycle, per internal Brega reports shared with Libya Akhbar.
For many Libyan families, especially fixed‑ or low‑income households, subsidized gas access is key to managing monthly expenses. The improved system aims to make this commodity reliably available, reducing reliance on costly alternatives.
Social researchers at Al‑Ahliya University in Tripoli said steady cooking fuel access aids household stability during economic uncertainty, freeing funds for healthcare and education.
Brega officials said lessons from this upgrade will inform similar improvements for other subsidized products like diesel and kerosene, under a broader downstream modernization drive.
