Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Eldaghayes: Libya's Leading Virologist Fighting Influenza and Infectious Diseases

A Career Dedicated to Public Health and Veterinary Science

Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Eldaghayes is one of Libya's foremost veterinary virologists, serving as Professor of Virology and Immunology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tripoli. Since joining the faculty in 2017, he has become a pivotal figure in Libya's fight against infectious diseases — from avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease to foodborne pathogens threatening public health. His research has earned over 1,800 citations, reflecting his impact on veterinary and public health science.

Academic Leadership at the University of Tripoli

Prof. Eldaghayes serves as Head of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tripoli. He holds a PhD and was promoted to Full Professor, supervising graduate students and leading research in virology, immunology, and microbiology. He also heads the Staff Members Affairs Office, demonstrating his commitment to academic governance.

Leading Libya's Influenza Surveillance Program

Since February 2022, Prof. Eldaghayes has directed the Influenza Surveillance Program at the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC). In February 2026, the NCDC organized a Scientific Day on World Influenza Day, where the program's achievements were reviewed as a cornerstone of Libya's pandemic preparedness. His landmark 2022 study on avian influenza virus in Tripoli's live bird markets, published in Veterinary World, provided critical early warning data on potential pandemic strains.

Groundbreaking Research Portfolio

Prof. Eldaghayes has authored dozens of peer-reviewed studies tackling Libya's most pressing infectious disease challenges. His early work on Infectious Bursal Disease Virus, published in Viral Immunology in 2006, has been cited nearly 200 times. His research spans:

  • Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus — characterization of the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 lineage causing outbreaks in Libya and Saudi Arabia
  • Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease viruses in Libyan poultry
  • Food safety: E. coli O157 in dairy products, Vibrio in seafood and meat, and antimicrobial resistance trends in Libya's food supply
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae as an emerging foodborne pathogen

Scientific Publishing and National Advisory Roles

Prof. Eldaghayes founded Eldaghayes Publisher, a Libya-based open-access publishing house hosting multiple peer-reviewed journals. This initiative gives Libyan researchers a platform to share findings internationally. Since 2017, he has also served as Scientific Advisor for the Libyan National Center of Animal Health and as a member of the Libyan Expert Committee on veterinary affairs.

His international collaborations include work with the FAO, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and the Pirbright Institute in the UK — one of the world's leading animal health research centers.

One Health: Connecting Animal and Human Health

In a country where the healthcare system faces immense challenges, Prof. Eldaghayes represents scientific excellence and dedication. His work connects animal health surveillance to human public health — a "One Health" approach essential for pandemic prevention. His influenza surveillance data informed Libya's response to seasonal and avian influenza threats, while his food safety research prompted calls for stricter antibiotic regulation in livestock.

Prof. Eldaghayes continues to teach and mentor the next generation of Libyan veterinarians at the University of Tripoli. As Libya rebuilds its health infrastructure, scientists like him are architects of a more resilient nation.
