The Tripoli Security Directorate announced Friday the arrest of a driver who performed dangerous stunts with his BMW through the streets of the capital, following a citizen complaint that prompted a swift police response. The incident has reignited public discussion about road safety and reckless driving enforcement in Libya.
According to an official statement from the Tripoli Security Directorate, the incident began when a resident of the Al-Hadba district filed a complaint against a BMW driver accused of obstructing traffic, disturbing worshippers and passersby, and damaging parked vehicles. The complaint described the driver performing dangerous maneuvers that posed a serious risk to public safety.
A police emergency patrol was dispatched immediately after receiving the report and successfully apprehended the suspect. The driver was then transferred to the Criminal Investigation Office for further questioning and legal proceedings, the directorate confirmed.
Reckless driving remains a persistent issue across Libya's urban centers, with authorities struggling to curb a culture of street racing and stunt driving that has gained traction on social media. In recent months, videos of drivers performing dangerous maneuvers have circulated widely on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, often filmed by passengers or bystanders.
Traffic safety experts point to a combination of weak enforcement, inadequate traffic calming measures, and a lack of public awareness campaigns as contributing factors. "Stunt driving is not just a legal violation — it is a direct threat to human life," a Tripoli-based road safety analyst told Libya Press. "When a driver treats public roads as a racetrack, they endanger everyone around them, including pedestrians, other motorists, and nearby residents."
Under Libyan traffic laws, reckless driving and performing stunts on public roads carry serious penalties, including vehicle impoundment, substantial fines, and potential imprisonment. The Tripoli Security Directorate has emphasized that it will continue to enforce traffic regulations strictly, particularly in residential areas where the risk to pedestrians and children is highest.
The arrest Friday follows a pattern of increased enforcement by the directorate, which has launched multiple campaigns targeting traffic violations across the capital in recent months. Officials have stated that citizen cooperation — through reporting dangerous behavior — plays a crucial role in maintaining road safety.
The successful arrest highlights the importance of citizen engagement in traffic enforcement. In this case, a single complaint from a concerned resident led to the swift apprehension of a driver whose behavior had disrupted an entire neighborhood, including disturbing worshippers during prayer times.
"The public is our first line of defense when it comes to road safety," a security official stated. "We urge all citizens to report any reckless driving they witness. No report is too small when it comes to protecting lives."
Social media has become both a catalyst and a witness to Libya's stunt driving problem. While platforms have helped document and expose dangerous behavior, they have also incentivized some drivers to perform ever-riskier stunts in pursuit of viral fame. Experts have called for a multi-pronged approach combining enforcement, education, and community awareness to address the root causes of the phenomenon.
Local activists have launched online campaigns calling for stricter penalties and better road infrastructure, including speed bumps, better lighting, and more visible police presence in known hotspot areas. The conversation has gained momentum as more residents share their experiences of near-misses and accidents caused by reckless drivers.
