Arsenal Football Club have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, ending one of the longest title droughts in English football history. The Gunners secured top spot after Manchester City drew 1-1 at Bournemouth, confirming what fans across north London had dreamed of for over two decades.
The title triumph marks a remarkable journey under manager Mikel Arteta, who has transformed the club from a fractured outfit with a half-empty stadium into English football's dominant force. Arsenal topped the table for much of the 2025/26 season, but their title bid appeared to hit shaky ground in April when a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City seemed to hand the advantage to Pep Guardiola's side. However, Arteta's men rallied magnificently and held off City to seal the league for the first time since the legendary Invincibles of the 2003/04 season.
This title ends a six-year period without a trophy and represents Arteta's second major honour as manager at the Emirates Stadium. The Spanish coach, who took charge in December 2019, has overseen one of the most impressive rebuilds in Premier League history. After three consecutive runners-up finishes, the breakthrough moment finally arrived, vindicating Arteta's long-term vision and unwavering belief in his project.
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, a two-time title-winner himself, expressed his delight at seeing his former club finally get over the line. "Brilliant! It's fully deserved," said Sky Sports' Smith, who was co-commentator for City's draw on Tuesday. "Arsenal have had the best defence — they haven't had the best attack — but as an overall unit Mikel Arteta has done incredibly well."
The Arsenal players watched the decisive Bournemouth vs Manchester City match from their London Colney training centre, erupting in celebration when the final whistle confirmed their title. Midfielder Declan Rice posted a picture on Instagram with his teammates captioned "I told you all.. it's done." Captain Martin Odegaard was pictured on Eberechi Eze's Instagram with the Arsenal bottle that a Manchester City fan had made viral at Stamford Bridge — a dig at the Gunners allegedly "bottling" the title that has now become a trophy celebration prop.
Former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who led the team to their last title in 2004 with the famous Invincibles side, featured in a celebratory post on Arsenal's X account. "You did it. Champions go on when others stop. This is your time. Now, go on and enjoy every moment," Wenger said.
There could be more silverware on the horizon for Arsenal as they bid to win the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. The Gunners face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, May 30. Smith added: "You have to have nervy moments when you haven't won it for that long and Arsenal did have them. But hopefully now they can play with freedom. It almost feels that the Champions League final is a free hit now."
Arsenal will be presented with the Premier League trophy after their final game of the season at Crystal Palace on Sunday. For a club that last lifted the trophy in 2004 — when Wenger's side went through the entire league season unbeaten with 26 wins and 12 draws — this moment has been 22 years in the making. The red side of north London can finally call themselves champions of England once again.
