The Basketball Africa League (BAL) has secured a landmark multiyear partnership with Qatar Foundation, marking the league's first Official Community Partner deal. The collaboration, announced as the 2026 BAL Playoffs approach, targets court infrastructure, gender equality, and youth development across the African continent. The deal signals a major injection of private capital into African sports at a pivotal moment for the league.
Qatar Foundation becomes the BAL's inaugural Official Community Partner under the multiyear agreement. The partnership directly supports NBA Africa's ambitious goal of constructing 1,000 basketball courts across the continent. Qatar Foundation branding will appear on all BAL game uniforms throughout the season. The organization also serves as Presenting Partner for the BAL's Ubuntu Trophy, which recognizes players for their community impact and social contributions beyond the court.
The deal extends to BAL4HER, the league's flagship platform dedicated to advancing women's participation in African sports. BAL4HER Power Hours connect young women with sports executives and leaders in each BAL host city, creating mentorship and career development opportunities. Qatar Sports Investments facilitated the collaboration, aligning the partnership with Qatar's broader sport-for-development initiatives across Africa, with particular emphasis on women's and girls' participation in athletics.
Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, emphasized sport's transformative potential. She highlighted that sport fosters healthier lives and builds resilient societies across communities. BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall welcomed the partnership, noting it significantly boosts youth and community programmes that sit at the core of the league's mission.
The partnership arrives as the 2026 BAL season reaches its climax. Twelve teams from twelve African countries competed across 42 group-phase games hosted in Pretoria, South Africa, and Rabat, Morocco. The Playoffs and Finals are scheduled from 22 to 31 May at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, returning to the Rwandan capital for the first time since 2024 under the BAL's agreement with the Rwanda Development Board.
Eight teams have qualified for the 2026 BAL Playoffs: Petro de Luanda of Angola, Al Ahly of Egypt, RSSB Tigers of Rwanda, Club Africain of Tunisia, Al Ahly Ly of Libya, FUS Rabat of Morocco, ASC Ville de Dakar of Senegal, and Dar City of Tanzania. Notably, four of the eight playoff teams are first-time participants at this stage, reflecting the league's expanding competitive depth.
This season introduces a two-game series format for the quarterfinals, a BAL first. However, the defending champions Alahli Tripoli failed to qualify, and reigning MVP Jean Jacques Boissy is ruled out due to a foot injury. Only two former champions, Al Ahly of Egypt and Petro de Luanda of Angola, remain in contention. The partnership with Qatar Foundation positions the BAL for sustained growth, tying private investment to infrastructure development and social inclusion across African basketball.
