As summer temperatures in several Libyan cities edge toward 50 degrees Celsius, health authorities and medical experts warn about heightened risks facing chronic kidney disease patients. The extreme heat, compounded by prolonged daily power outages across much of the country, creates a dangerous environment for Libya's kidney patient population.

According to research cited by the UK Kidney Care foundation, hospital admissions for kidney-related illnesses increase by approximately 30% during periods of extreme heat. For Libya, where summer temperatures routinely surpass 45°C and electricity cuts can last 12 to 18 hours daily, the convergence is particularly dangerous.

Why extreme heat is especially dangerous for kidney patients

The kidneys regulate fluid balance, filter waste, and maintain electrolyte stability. In healthy individuals, sweating during heat stress increases water and salt loss, and the kidneys compensate by conserving fluids. For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), this mechanism is impaired.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Mismari, a Tripoli-based nephrologist, told local media that kidney patients have a narrow tolerance for fluid fluctuations. "A healthy person can drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily to compensate for heat loss, but kidney patients must follow strictly controlled fluid intake," he said. "Excess water can overload the heart, while too little accelerates dehydration and acute kidney failure."

Power outages disrupt dialysis access

Dialysis requires reliable electricity, clean water, and specialized equipment. Across Libya, the national grid struggles to meet peak summer demand, leaving dialysis centers and home-based patients vulnerable to sudden power cuts. Many dialysis centers operate on backup generators, but fuel shortages and maintenance gaps persist.

A Libyan Ministry of Health report earlier this year acknowledged that 14 of the country's 42 dialysis centers faced equipment or power reliability issues. For patients requiring hemodialysis three times per week, even a single missed session during a heat wave can be critical. "When a patient misses dialysis, toxins accumulate rapidly," Dr. Al-Mismari noted. "Heat stress increases toxin production, making the gap even more dangerous."

Dehydration, medication, and electrolyte risks

Extreme heat induces heavy perspiration, depleting sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes. For kidney patients, this mineral loss combined with impaired excretion creates a high-risk metabolic state. Common medications such as ACE inhibitors and diuretics can compound the problem by altering electrolyte balance further.

Medical guidelines recommend that kidney patients in hot climates:

  • Monitor daily weight changes as an indicator of fluid balance
  • Increase fluid intake only within prescribed limits
  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (11:00 AM to 4:00 PM)
  • Use cool compresses and fans when air conditioning is unavailable
  • Contact a nephrologist if symptoms such as dizziness, swelling, or reduced urine output appear

A public health challenge requiring urgent action

Libya's healthcare infrastructure, strained by years of instability, faces a recurring crisis as heat waves intensify and prolong. The combination of extreme temperatures, unreliable electricity, and high prevalence of chronic kidney disease demands a coordinated response from the Ministry of Health, dialysis centers, and civil society.

International health bodies have urged Libya to invest in solar-powered dialysis units and heat-resilient medical infrastructure. Pilot projects have been announced, but widespread implementation remains limited. Patients and their families continue navigating daily trade-offs between heat exposure, medication timing, and treatment access.

As Libya endures another summer of record-breaking temperatures, medical professionals stress that kidney patients need not just medical care, but a reliable electrical grid, backup fuel supplies, and community awareness of heat-related risks to survive.
