Benghazi is set to host the Second General Conference of the Asian-African Parliamentary Council on June 15–16, 2026, bringing together parliamentary delegations from across two continents in a major diplomatic event for Libya. The conference, held under the theme "Future Vision," marks a significant moment for Libya's return to the regional and international stage.
Mr. Abdullah Al-Masri Al-Fadhil, Head of the Libyan Parliament's Diwan, officially welcomed all participating parliamentary delegations on Friday, June 12. He emphasized that holding the conference in Benghazi represents a milestone in joint parliamentary work between Asian and African nations, reflecting the city's growing stature as a hub for regional and international events.
"This conference is an opportunity to strengthen parliamentary dialogue and exchange expertise and visions on issues of common interest," Al-Fadhil stated, adding that the choice of Benghazi comes at a time when the city is witnessing rapid urban and developmental renaissance.
Al-Fadhil highlighted that Benghazi's selection as host city reflects the stability and development the city has achieved in recent years. He pointed to accelerated infrastructure projects, improved public services, roads, and vital projects as evidence of the city's capacity to host major international gatherings. "Delegations will witness firsthand the reconstruction and development movement that reflects the will of Libyans to build and progress," he said.
The Head of Parliament Diwan also noted that hosting this event expresses the Libyan Parliament's commitment to supporting parliamentary cooperation and strengthening relations between Asian and African peoples and nations, contributing to partnership, integration, and shared interests.
The conference is widely seen as a signal of Libya's growing diplomatic momentum. According to the official conference page on the Libyan Parliament's Facebook account, the event "reflects Libya's return to the regional and international scene." Spokesperson Abdullah Belhaj previously confirmed that Benghazi is fully prepared to host the gathering, underscoring Libya's readiness to re-engage with multilateral institutions.
For Libyans, this event carries deep significance. It demonstrates that the country — and Benghazi in particular — can serve as a bridge between Africa and Asia, leveraging its unique geographic and cultural position. The conference also aligns with broader efforts to normalize Libya's international standing after years of internal division.
Al-Fadhil extended his wishes to all participating delegations for a pleasant stay in Benghazi and for the conference to achieve its objectives, producing recommendations that strengthen Asian-African parliamentary cooperation and support paths of development and stability across member states. The outcomes of this two-day gathering could shape parliamentary diplomacy across the Global South for years to come.
