The Tripoli Security Directorate announced the closure of the traffic light at the Al-Sidra area for a period of two days, effective Friday, to allow the contracting company to commence infrastructure works in conjunction with the weekend holiday. The decision is part of ongoing efforts to complete service projects across the Libyan capital.
In an official statement, the Traffic and Licensing Affairs Office under the Tripoli Security Directorate confirmed that the measure would be strictly temporary throughout the duration of the works. The office urged all road users to adhere to traffic directions and instructions issued by the competent authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid congestion in the surrounding areas.
The closure is specifically aimed at facilitating infrastructure development at one of Tripoli's busiest intersections. The Al-Sidra area serves as a critical transit point connecting several key districts of the capital, including the city center to southern residential neighborhoods, making it a vital artery for daily commuters.
The Traffic and Licensing Office further clarified that vehicles arriving from the southern areas can use Al-Sidra road itself as an alternative route during the closure period. This measure is designed to facilitate movement for thousands of daily commuters and reduce the impact resulting from project implementation.
Authorities emphasized that these alternative routes have been carefully selected following traffic flow assessments. The goal is to minimize disruption to daily commuters while ensuring that infrastructure work can proceed safely and without interruption. Traffic management personnel have been stationed at key diversion points to assist drivers unfamiliar with the alternative routes.
The Tripoli Security Directorate stressed the importance of driver cooperation with traffic police officers stationed at key points around the closure area. Motorists are required to comply with alternative routes and field instructions to maintain safety for all road users and ensure organized traffic flow until the works are completed on Sunday.
Traffic police units have been deployed at strategic locations to guide drivers and manage any potential bottlenecks during peak hours. The Security Directorate warned that vehicles disregarding traffic instructions could face legal consequences.
The closure comes as part of broader infrastructure improvement efforts across Tripoli, where municipal authorities have been working to upgrade road networks, utility connections, and public facilities. The timing of the closure during the weekend holiday period is intended to minimize the impact on the daily commute of residents and workers in the capital.
Similar infrastructure projects have been undertaken in other parts of Tripoli in recent months, including road resurfacing in the Gargaresh area and drainage system upgrades in downtown districts. These projects are part of a wider push by Libyan authorities to address years of underinvestment in public infrastructure that has led to deteriorating road conditions and traffic congestion across the capital.
Road improvements, drainage systems, and utility upgrades have been prioritized in several key districts of Tripoli as part of a multi-year development plan. Local residents have expressed cautious optimism about infrastructure developments, though many emphasize the need for sustained maintenance and long-term planning beyond individual projects.
The current closure, while causing temporary inconvenience for drivers passing through the Al-Sidra area, is expected to ultimately improve traffic conditions at one of Tripoli's most congested intersections once the infrastructure work is completed. The Tripoli Security Directorate confirmed it will announce the reopening of the traffic light as soon as the works are finished.
