Bahrain's military says Iran deliberately targeted residential areas in renewed strikes, calling the attacks a "systematic hostile approach" against civilians in the kingdom.
The Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) accused Iran on Monday of pursuing a "systematic hostile approach" targeting civilians, following what it described as "treacherous" aerial attacks on the kingdom. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for strikes on what it said were US military facilities in Bahrain and Oman.
In an official statement, the BDF General Command said: "Iran continues its systematic hostile approach through its sinful aggressions with missiles and drones targeting civilians in the Kingdom of Bahrain." The military added that its air defence systems "intercepted and destroyed a number of treacherous Iranian aerial attacks" on Monday morning.
IRGC Claims Responsibility for New Strikes
The IRGC announced responsibility for fresh strikes targeting US military installations in Oman and Bahrain, according to a statement on its official website. The statement, carried by Tasnim news agency, said: "In addition to targeting US military installations in Al-Jufair, Bahrain, where fires are raging, the IRGC Navy targeted and destroyed radar systems," including a ship-detection radar in Oman.
The IRGC described the operations as retaliatory actions against recent US strikes. The escalation marks a significant widening of the conflict, with both Bahrain and Oman drawn into the crossfire.
Over 200 Rockets and 600 Drones: A History of Attacks
Bahraini Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani had previously detailed the scale of Iranian aggression, stating that Bahrain was subjected to more than 200 rockets and 600 drones during the conflict. Speaking earlier in July, Al-Zayani stressed that these attacks occurred despite a memorandum of understanding on a ceasefire, underscoring Iran's lack of commitment to de-escalation.
"There is no justification for targeting residential areas," Al-Zayani stated, calling for international action against what Bahrain views as a calculated campaign of intimidation. He urged the United Nations to take a firm stance on the violations.
Regional Fallout and International Implications
The strikes on Bahrain and Oman signal an expansion of the Iran-US proxy conflict into new Gulf arenas. Oman, traditionally a neutral mediator in regional disputes, found itself directly impacted as the IRGC claimed to have destroyed radar infrastructure on its soil.
