The Basketball Africa League (BAL) and Qatar Foundation have announced a landmark multiyear collaboration that designates Qatar Foundation as the league's first Official Community Partner, marking a significant step in leveraging basketball for social development across the African continent.
The partnership, facilitated by Qatar Sports Investments, will support the BAL's social impact programming and efforts to expand basketball accessibility throughout Africa. Key initiatives include court renovations as part of NBA Africa's broader commitment to build 1,000 basketball courts across the continent, and BAL4HER — the league's dedicated platform for advancing gender equality in the African sports ecosystem. Qatar Foundation will also serve as the Presenting Partner of the BAL's Ubuntu Trophy, awarded annually to a player who has made a significant impact on the local community during the season. The foundation's logo will be displayed on the back of all BAL game uniforms.
Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, emphasized the foundation's vision: "At Qatar Foundation, we believe that the true strength of a nation lies in the wellbeing and potential of its people. We see sport as one of the most powerful tools for positive change. It is not only a means of physical activity, but a catalyst for healthier lives, stronger communities, and more resilient societies." BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall added: "Qatar Foundation shares our commitment to giving back to the youth, fans and communities that support the BAL year-round. This collaboration will enhance our ongoing social impact programming that uses the power of basketball to positively impact lives across the continent."
Beginning this season, Qatar Foundation is supporting BAL4HER Power Hours in each BAL host city, connecting young women pursuing careers in sports with leading executives through structured conversations, networking, and immersive programming. The 2026 BAL season has featured 12 top club teams from 12 African countries playing 42 games across conferences in Pretoria, Rabat, and Kigali. Eight teams have qualified for the playoffs, including Libya's Al Ahly Ly, with the finals scheduled for May 22-31 at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. The collaboration reinforces a shared commitment to using sport as a platform for opportunity, inclusion, and long-term community impact across Africa.
This partnership signals a growing trend of major institutions investing in African basketball not just as entertainment, but as a vehicle for education, gender equality, and youth empowerment — with Libyan fans watching closely as Al Ahly Ly competes on the continental stage.
