Chongqing to Host International Friendship Cities Cooperation Conference 2026 with 29 Countries

The southwestern Chinese megacity of Chongqing is set to host the 2026 International Friendship Cities Cooperation Conference (CIFC) from May 19 to 20, bringing together delegations from 38 provinces and cities across 29 countries. The biennial event, held concurrently with the 8th Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT), aims to strengthen sub-national cooperation for common development and build on the success of its inaugural edition in 2024.

Main Facts and Key Details

According to Wang Wen, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Chongqing Municipality and executive vice president of the Chongqing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CQPAFFC), the conference has already drawn 28 provincial and city leaders, representatives from nine international friendship organizations, and foreign consular officials and business association representatives. The event will feature six major activities, including an opening ceremony on May 20 with the signing of special cooperation projects, an economic and trade cooperation matchmaking forum, a cultural tourism promotion event, a week-long Food and Culture Carnival starting May 19, a month-long international exchange exhibition at the Chongqing Art Museum, and themed site visits to urban renewal projects and innovation hubs.

Reactions and Context

Chongqing has steadily expanded its international sister city network, now maintaining relationships with 59 cities across 39 countries, along with friendly exchange relations with 137 additional cities. Notably, 17 sister cities are located along the Belt and Road Initiative and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. Li Mingquan, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office, highlighted that the matchmaking forum themed "Shared Opportunities · Meeting the World in Chongqing" will showcase the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, financial services, and Chongqing's "33618" modern manufacturing cluster. Several cooperation projects, including those with Tashkent Region in Uzbekistan and Lima in Peru, have been incorporated into national diplomatic agendas.

Challenges and Outlook

Three key outcomes are expected from the conference: expanded international friendships, bringing together long-standing partners such as Seattle (sister city since 1983) and newer friends like Annaba Province, Algeria (2025); tangible cooperation, with Chongqing planning to sign three-year action plans with several friendship cities in economy, technology, culture, sports, and youth exchanges; and mutual learning among cities at different development stages in mega-city governance, ecological protection, and industrial innovation. The conference underscores Chongqing's growing role as a hub for international municipal diplomacy and cross-border economic collaboration in western China.

The CIFC 2026 represents a significant step in China's efforts to deepen people-to-people ties and sub-national partnerships worldwide, positioning Chongqing as a gateway for global cities seeking cooperation in trade, culture, and innovation.
