Authorities in eastern Libya have released 10 Palestine solidarity activists who were arrested in May while attempting to break Israel's siege of the Gaza Strip. The members of the Global Sumud Land Convoy had been detained for over two weeks by armed groups affiliated with the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF).
The release follows sustained international pressure from human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, which called the detentions "arbitrary" and demanded the activists' immediate freedom.
On May 24, 2026, an armed group affiliated with the self-proclaimed Libyan Arab Armed Forces detained the activists as they prepared to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The convoy, known as the Global Sumud Land Convoy, was part of an international effort to challenge Israel's ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The activists were held in a prison facility in eastern Libya — a region controlled by forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar — without formal charges or access to legal representation, according to Amnesty International's statement on June 27.
Amnesty International called on the LAAF to ensure the immediate release of all 10 convoy members, stating they were "arbitrarily detained solely for attempting to deliver aid to Gaza amid Israel's ongoing genocide." The organization emphasized that humanitarian workers and activists must not be criminalized for their solidarity efforts.
Democracy Now was among the first international outlets to report the release, confirming the activists had been freed after weeks behind bars. The exact circumstances of their release remain unclear, though diplomatic sources suggest back-channel negotiations played a role.
Libya's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict has remained complicated since the 2011 revolution. While the country's eastern authorities under Haftar have historically maintained indirect diplomatic channels with Israel, public sentiment across Libya remains overwhelmingly supportive of the Palestinian cause.
The detention of humanitarian activists in May sparked outrage among Libyan civil society groups, who viewed the arrests as a betrayal of longstanding Libyan solidarity with Palestine. The release now signals a potential recalibration of the eastern government's approach to Gaza-related activism.
The Global Sumud Land Convoy is one of several initiatives attempting to deliver land-based humanitarian aid to Gaza, where Israel's military operations have created what the United Nations describes as a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Over 2.3 million residents face severe shortages of food, water, medical supplies, and fuel.
Multiple land and sea convoy attempts have been intercepted or blocked over the past year, making the successful — though delayed — participation of the Global Sumud activists a significant moment for the international solidarity movement.
The release of these 10 activists is not just a legal outcome — it is a reminder that humanitarian solidarity remains a powerful force, even in regions governed by complex political dynamics. Libya's decision to free the convoy members may encourage future aid missions and reinforce the principle that humanitarian work must be protected under international law.
