The Libyan Army has announced the deployment of its forces to the Turkish city of Izmir to participate in the EFES 2026 international military exercise, one of the most prominent multinational drills held in the region.
According to a statement released by the Libyan Army's General Staff, advanced units arrived in Izmir as part of a comprehensive training plan directed by Lieutenant General Salah Al-Namroush, Chief of the General Staff, aimed at enhancing combat readiness and strengthening military cooperation with partner nations.
The EFES exercise is held biennially and brings together armed forces from multiple countries to develop joint operational methods, improve coordination, and expose participants to cutting-edge training methodologies and military technologies. Libya's participation underscores its commitment to modernizing its armed forces in line with international standards.
The Libyan contingent includes units from the Land and Naval General Staff, the Western Coast Military Zone, the 111th Reinforced Brigade, Naval Special Forces, the Supply and Logistics Authority, the Military Engineering Department, and the Military Medical Corps. Additional formations are expected to arrive in the coming hours ahead of the exercise's launch.
This deployment comes on the heels of recent military talks held in Tripoli between Libyan and Turkish military officials. Lieutenant General Mohammed Musa, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army's Land Forces, met with General Levent Ergun, Deputy Chief of the Turkish General Staff, to discuss strengthening bilateral military cooperation.
During the meetings held at the General Command headquarters in Tripoli, both sides focused on developing training programs, raising combat readiness, and benefiting from Turkish expertise in military training and planning. The talks emphasized expanding qualification programs and exchanging expertise across various military specializations to enhance the efficiency of Libyan personnel.
The General Staff noted that the meeting comes within the framework of Lieutenant General Al-Namroush's efforts to support international military partnerships and strengthen cooperation with friendly countries in a way that serves the development of the Libyan military institution.
Military cooperation between Libya and Turkey has deepened in recent years, with Ankara providing training and advisory support to units aligned with Libya's Government of National Unity. The relationship has included joint exercises, equipment transfers, and capacity-building programs designed to help Libya rebuild its national military institution after more than a decade of fragmentation.
Military analysts view Libya's participation in EFES 2026 as a significant step toward integrating the country's armed forces into regional security frameworks. The exercise provides an opportunity for Libyan officers and soldiers to train alongside NATO-standard forces, gaining exposure to modern command structures, combined-arms operations, and advanced logistics management.
