Libya's House of Representatives has taken two decisive steps toward political stabilization this week, completing the formation of the country's Electoral Commission and preparing to vote on a 210 billion dinar national budget.
According to parliamentary sources, the Assembly finalized the membership of the High National Elections Commission, a critical institution for any future national elections. The commission must be fully operational before Libya can hold presidential and parliamentary polls that have been repeatedly delayed since 2019. The Parliament also approved a substantial budget allocation for the commission to carry out its mandate.
Separately, MP Arefi announced that Parliament will convene next week to debate and approve the 210 billion dinar annual budget – one of the largest in Libya's recent history. The massive spending plan is expected to cover public sector salaries, infrastructure development, and social services across the country's regions. The budget's scale reflects both the ambitions of Libya's leadership and the significant revenues generated by the country's oil sector this year.
Observers view these developments as positive signals for Libya's fragile political process, though challenges remain in reconciling the eastern and western political institutions into a unified electoral framework.
