Mellitah Oil & Gas has announced the successful completion of fabrication and assembly work for the Bouri Gas Utilization Project, marking a major milestone for Libya's energy sector. The project reached 69 percent overall completion, significantly exceeding the planned target of 62 percent, and was finished ahead of the original schedule.
The achievement was celebrated at a ceremony in Ravenna, Italy, attended by representatives from project contractor Saipem, one of the world's leading oilfield services companies. The Bouri Gas Utilization Project is considered one of the largest strategic investments in Libya's oil and gas sector to date. A transport vessel has already begun delivering the fabricated modules from Italy to the Bouri field, located off the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean Sea. The modules will be lifted and installed on Platforms 3 and 4 of the Bouri field, which is one of Libya's largest offshore hydrocarbon assets. Mellitah Oil & Gas is a joint venture between Libya's National Oil Corporation and the Italian energy major Eni.
Industry experts have described the milestone as a significant step forward for Libya's energy infrastructure. The Bouri field, discovered in the 1970s, has been a cornerstone of Libya's oil and gas production for decades. The new gas utilization project represents a renewed commitment to modernizing the country's energy facilities after years of conflict and underinvestment. Saipem's involvement as the main contractor brings world-class engineering expertise to the project. The completion of fabrication ahead of schedule signals improving operational stability in Libya's energy sector, which has faced repeated disruptions due to political instability and infrastructure damage.
Once fully operational, the Bouri Gas Utilization Project is expected to significantly boost Libya's natural gas production capacity while reducing gas flaring at the field. The project directly supports Libya's commitment to the World Bank's "Zero Routine Flaring by 2030" initiative, which aims to eliminate the wasteful practice of burning off associated gas during oil production. However, challenges remain, including the ongoing need for security at offshore installations, the complexity of module installation in the Mediterranean, and the broader political environment in Libya. Successful completion of the installation phase will be critical to realizing the project's full potential.
The Bouri Gas Utilization Project stands as a testament to the continued international partnership between Libya and global energy firms. As the modules make their way from Italian shipyards to the Libyan offshore field, the project could serve as a model for future investments in Libya's vast but underexploited hydrocarbon resources, potentially unlocking billions of cubic feet of natural gas for domestic use and export.
