A high-level delegation from the Sultanate of Oman, led by His Excellency Engineer Ghalib bin Said Al Maamari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Trade and Industry, has arrived in Tripoli to participate in the 29th session of the General Assembly of the Arab Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining Organization (AIDMO). The visit marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral economic relations between Oman and Libya.
The session, held at the ministerial level in Libya's capital, brought together ministers of industry and heads of delegations from across the Arab world. Oman's participation underscores its commitment to Arab economic integration and industrial collaboration. The AIDMO General Assembly serves as a key platform for Arab nations to coordinate industrial policies, harmonize standardization efforts, and advance the mining sector across the region.
Discussions during the assembly focused on joint industrial projects, technology transfer, and the development of unified Arab standards that facilitate intra-regional trade. The delegation's presence signals Oman's desire to play an active role in shaping the region's industrial future.
Beyond the AIDMO proceedings, the Omani delegation engaged in separate bilateral discussions with Libyan officials. According to sources, the talks explored promising investment opportunities in key sectors including aviation, cement production, and digital transformation. These sectors align with Libya's reconstruction priorities and Oman's Vision 2040 economic diversification strategy.
The two sides reviewed prospects for joint cooperation and assessed the capabilities and resources that align with the development priorities of both nations. The discussions reflected a mutual interest in strengthening economic ties and unlocking new avenues for private sector collaboration.
A key outcome of the visit was the agreement to organize a reciprocal trade delegation from Libya to the Sultanate of Oman. Additionally, plans are being developed to hold an exhibition of Libyan products in Oman, providing Libyan businesses with a platform to showcase their goods and services to Omani and international buyers.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of establishing a joint Libyan-Omani Business Council. This council would serve as a permanent mechanism to support communication between the private sectors of both countries, facilitate business matchmaking, and remove trade barriers. The proposed council represents a long-term commitment to institutionalizing economic cooperation.
Earlier this year, a high-level delegation from the Oman Investment Authority visited Libya to discuss strategic partnerships in aviation, cement, and digital transformation. That visit laid the groundwork for the current discussions and demonstrated Oman's growing interest in the Libyan market as the country continues its post-conflict reconstruction phase.
The Oman Investment Authority's engagement reflects a broader strategy to identify high-potential investment destinations in North Africa. Libya, with its strategic location, natural resources, and reconstruction needs, presents compelling opportunities for Omani investors across multiple sectors.
The visit comes at a time when Arab economic cooperation is gaining renewed momentum. Both Oman and Libya have expressed commitment to deepening intra-Arab trade and investment flows. The AIDMO framework provides the institutional structure for such cooperation, while bilateral initiatives like the proposed business council add practical mechanisms for implementation.
Observers note that the timing of the visit is significant, as Libya continues to stabilize and open its economy to international partnerships. Oman's engagement serves as a model for how Arab nations can support Libya's reconstruction while advancing their own economic interests.
The Omani delegation's presence in Tripoli sends a clear message about the Sultanate's confidence in Libya's economic potential and its willingness to invest in a shared prosperous future. As both nations move forward with concrete plans for trade exhibitions, business council formation, and sector-specific investments, the foundation for a robust economic partnership is being laid.
