Sabha International Airport in southern Libya was officially reopened on Saturday, May 16, 2026, following comprehensive maintenance and expansion works supervised by the National Development Agency. The reopening marks a landmark moment for the Fezzan region, restoring a vital air transport hub that connects Libyas south to the rest of the country and beyond.
The newly renovated airport features a state-of-the-art passenger hall equipped with modern air conditioning systems, advanced fire safety and suppression units, contemporary glass facades, and up-to-date technical and administrative facilities. The project also included the rehabilitation of the main runway and aircraft parking stands, along with technical maintenance of the airports operational infrastructure to ensure safe and regular flight resumption.
External works were equally extensive, encompassing the paving of surrounding roads, construction of a modern parking lot with organized lanes and advanced lighting networks, and a comprehensive rainwater drainage system. The upgrades aim to meet international airport standards and accommodate growing air traffic in the region.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mahmoud Al-Farjani, Director General of the National Development Agency; Sabha Mayor Engineer Ahfaf Al-Aswad; several members of the House of Representatives; Brigadier General Ahmed Salem Al-Darasi, Commander of the Southern Military Region; Brigadier General Khaled Al-Bista, Director of Sabha Security; along with military and security leaders, tribal elders, and civil society representatives from across the south.
Officials described the reopening as the beginning of a new phase of strategic projects across multiple sectors under the General Commands 2030 vision. Al-Farjani stated that the airport inauguration represents the first in a series of major developmental projects planned for southern Libya, stressing that the region had suffered years of marginalization and declining services.
The reopening coincided with the 12th anniversary of Libyas February 17 revolution, adding symbolic weight to the event. Local leaders and attendees hailed the project as a practical step toward rebuilding southern Libyas infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
Sabha International Airport is one of the oldest airports in Libya, originally established in 1948 and officially opened on December 28, 1968. It has historically served as a primary travel hub for the Fezzan region and a transit point for cross-Saharan flights.
Despite the celebratory reopening, questions remain about the sustainability of operations and the regularity of scheduled flights. The airport had suffered from years of neglect, and ensuring consistent commercial service will require ongoing investment in staffing, equipment, and airline partnerships.
Observers note that the reopening reflects a broader push to reactivate critical infrastructure in southern Libya, with parallel projects underway in roads, healthcare, education, and utilities. The success of Sabha Airport could serve as a model for similar rehabilitation efforts across the Fezzan region, though long-term stability and funding remain key challenges.
The airport is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting economic activity, improving access to essential services, and strengthening connectivity between Libyas southern cities and the rest of the nation.
