The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a comprehensive series of parenting, anti-bullying, and child wellbeing programmes as part of its Year of the Family initiative, aimed at strengthening support systems for parents, children, and family life across the country. The initiatives were introduced by the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood to mark the International Day of Families on May 15.
The new agenda, launched under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak — Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation — includes a wide range of programmes. These include digital parenting guidance, mental health discussions, anti-bullying campaigns, and children's leadership programmes designed to strengthen family cohesion and improve the quality of life for Emirati families.
A key component is the launch of a new educational training platform for parents and professionals working in motherhood and childhood fields, aligned with international best practices. The council will also introduce a "Digital Knowledge Guide for Parents" to help families better understand the digital environments their children interact with daily. Additionally, the second season of the "Mjlis Podcast" will address contemporary family challenges including parenting, mental health, work-life balance, and digital safety.
The council also announced a dedicated WhatsApp channel to strengthen community communication and provide ongoing updates on programmes related to motherhood, childhood, parenting, mental health, and family wellbeing.
The initiatives reflect the UAE's growing focus on evidence-based policymaking in family affairs. The Supreme Council also announced a "Studies, Research and Guidelines" programme focused on publishing specialised research on emerging motherhood and childhood issues to support future planning. The Fatima bint Mubarak International Award for Motherhood and Childhood will also hold a new edition, recognising outstanding contributions to mother and child issues at both local and international levels.
Child safety remains a central pillar of the agenda. The council will continue implementing the "Bullying Prevention" programme and the "School Bullying Prevention Award", alongside a dedicated awareness campaign for safe educational environments. A "National Roadmap" aimed at ending violence against children will also be launched, alongside the Abu Dhabi Child Friendly City Initiative as part of the broader Child-Friendly Cities programme.
The initiatives come at a time when families across the region face evolving technological and social challenges, including the impact of digital platforms on children's mental health and the growing need for work-life balance support. The formation of a new session of the Emirati Children's Parliament, in cooperation with the Federal National Council, and a new Children's Advisory Council — including representatives from all emirates and children of determination — signals a commitment to inclusive, youth-driven policymaking.
As the Year of the Family programme continues throughout 2026, these initiatives are expected to serve as a model for family-centred policy across the Gulf region, with potential for broader adoption of the digital parenting tools, anti-bullying frameworks, and child leadership programmes in neighbouring countries.
