The National Meteorological Center of Libya has issued a weather bulletin for Friday, June 12, 2026, forecasting thunderstorms and scattered rainfall across several regions. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly starting Saturday, bringing relief from the intense heat that has gripped the country this week. The weather system marks a notable shift in Libya's seasonal patterns, with rain reaching areas that rarely see precipitation during this time of year.
According to the National Meteorological Center, the coastal strip from Ras Ijdair to Sirte, passing through the Jefara Plain and Nafusa Mountains, will see clear to partly cloudy skies during the day. Winds will be moderate northwesterly, shifting gradually to northeasterly. Temperatures in these areas will range between 26 and 30°C along the coast and the Western Mountains, while Bani Walid, Al-Qaryat, Mazda, and Abonjim will see highs of 32 to 36°C before the expected drop begins Saturday.
In the Gulf region and Benghazi Plain up to Amsaad, clouds will multiply repeatedly overnight and into Saturday, bringing chances of scattered rainfall on coastal areas and the Green Mountain region. Winds will shift to moderate to active northwesterly, with temperatures between 27 and 32°C and a noticeable decline starting tomorrow.
The southern regions — including Al-Jufra, Sabha, Ghhat, Ghadames, and Al-Hamadah — will see thunderstorm cells develop this evening, particularly over Ghadames, Al-Hamadah, Al-Jufra, the Haruj Mountains, and border areas with Algeria. Scattered rainfall is expected in these zones. Temperatures remain high at 39 to 42°C but will drop tomorrow.
The oases of Al-Sirir, Tazirbu, and Al-Kufra will maintain clear to partly cloudy skies with light to moderate northwesterly to northeasterly winds. Temperatures range between 38 and 41°C, with a slight decline expected on Saturday for the oases and Sunday for remaining areas.
For residents of southern Libya, where temperatures regularly exceed 40°C in June, the incoming thunderstorms bring both relief and risk. Flash flooding in low-lying areas of Al-Jufra and Sabha is a concern when sudden rainfall hits dry desert terrain. The National Meteorological Center has urged citizens in affected regions to exercise caution near wadis and valleys that may experience rapid water flow.
The rainfall is particularly significant for agricultural areas in the Jefara Plain and the Green Mountain region, where farmers depend on seasonal rains to supplement irrigation. Even modest precipitation during this period can benefit late-spring crops and reduce water stress on olive groves and fruit orchards that are vital to the local economy.
Coastal residents in Tripoli and Misrata should prepare for changing conditions overnight as cloud cover increases. The temperature drop will provide welcome relief after days of intense heat, making outdoor activities more comfortable through the weekend.
The National Meteorological Center forecasts that moderate weather conditions will continue across most of Libya, particularly in the north and center, through the middle of next week. This extended period of stable, cooler weather is unusual for mid-June and represents a positive development for a country that faces increasing heat stress due to climate variability.
Libyans are advised to stay updated on weather developments through official channels and to take necessary precautions during thunderstorm activity, especially in southern and western regions. The combination of rain and dust can reduce visibility on roads, so drivers should remain alert during evening and overnight hours.
