More than 211,000 students across Libya have commenced the first phase of the Basic Education Certificate examinations for the 2025–2026 academic year, according to the Libyan Ministry of Education. The exams, which began this week, mark one of the largest examination cycles in the country's recent history, with students sitting for tests in both domestic and international locations.
The National Examination Center confirmed that the exams are being administered across more than 598 examination committees nationwide. An additional 115 committees have been set up in 34 countries abroad to accommodate Libyan students living outside the country, ensuring that every eligible student can participate regardless of location.
The Ministry of Education, operating under the Government of National Unity, has emphasized its commitment to maintaining educational standards despite the ongoing challenges facing the country. The successful deployment of examination infrastructure across dozens of countries reflects a coordinated effort between Libyan diplomatic missions and the National Examination Center.
"This year's examination cycle demonstrates that Libya's education system continues to function and serve its citizens, both at home and abroad," a statement from the Ministry of Education read. The ministry urged students to approach the exams with confidence and assured families that all necessary logistical arrangements had been completed.
For families across Libya, exam season is a period of intense anticipation. In cities like Tripoli, Benghazi, and Misrata, parents have been seen accompanying children to examination centers early in the morning. Local media outlets, including Morning Libya, have been providing live coverage from examination sites, capturing the determination on students' faces as they enter the halls.
"I studied hard all year and I'm ready," said one student outside a Tripoli examination center. "I want to make my parents proud and continue to secondary school." These moments underscore the resilience of Libya's younger generation, who continue to pursue education despite years of instability.
The scale of this examination cycle — over 211,000 students — is a powerful indicator of Libya's demographic reality and the critical importance of investing in education. With a young population and ongoing political transitions, the country's future stability and prosperity depend heavily on the quality and accessibility of its education system.
International organizations, including UNESCO and UNICEF, have repeatedly emphasized that sustained investment in Libyan education is essential for long-term peacebuilding. Every student who completes their basic education represents a step toward a more skilled, informed, and engaged citizenry — the foundation Libya needs for reconstruction and development.
Results from the Basic Education Certificate exams are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Students who pass will advance to secondary education, continuing their academic journey. The Ministry of Education has pledged to publish results transparently and provide support for students who may need to retake examinations.
As Libya navigates its complex political landscape, the determination of over 211,000 students to sit for their exams offers a hopeful reminder: the country's future is being shaped not just in government halls, but in classrooms and examination centers across the nation and beyond.
